Adobe appoints Alan Chan as General Manager of Digital Media for Hong Kong and Taiwan

Hong Kong, China, May 31, 2017 / - Adobe today named Alan Chan as general manager of Digital Media for Hong Kong and Taiwan. In this role, Alan will be responsible for driving and operating the company’s digital media business, comprising Creative Cloud and Document Cloud businesses in both markets. Based in Hong Kong, he will report to Yew Hwee Ng, senior managing director of Greater China.

Before joining Microsoft, Chan served in a diverse range of roles in other sizable technology companies including Cisco, Network Associates, Jardine OneSolution and Redknee Inc. He is experienced in developing business strategies, expanding partner ecosystems and boosting business growth with proven success.

Nordic Semiconductor introduces latest nRF52 Series SoC and demonstrates Bluetooth 5 range enhancements plus Nordic Thingy:52 prototyping tool at CES Asia

Hong Kong, China, May 31, 2017 / - Nordic and design partners unveil latest Bluetooth low energy and IEEE 802.15.4 innovations at Asia’s leading consumer electronics event. Product demonstrations include Thread for home automation, voice-activated remote control, NFC, and wireless charging

Nordic Semiconductor ASA today announces it will unveil an addition to its family of nRF52 Series Systems-on-Chip (SoCs), a range of Bluetooth#174; low energy and IEEE 802.15.4-powered applications, a prototyping tool, and reference designs at CES Asia. The company also confirms details of design partner companies it will be hosting on its booth (#2442 in Hall N2) at the event. CES Asia is the premier exhibition for the consumer technology industry in the Asian marketplace and will be held in Shanghai, China, from June 7-9, 2017.

Nordic will launch the latest addition to its nRF52 Series SoCs at CES Asia. The new SoC is a lower cost device powered by a low power consumption ARM#174; Cortex#174; M4 microprocessor. The SoC integrates a key subset of the features of the higher-end nRF52840 and nRF52832 SoCs and brings the range and throughput enhancements of Bluetooth 5 to the most cost-sensitive, high-volume applications.

In addition, a video presentation on the booth will show the capabilities of the nRF52840 SoC and S140 SoftDevice’s (Nordic’s latest RF protocol ‘stack’) Bluetooth 5-compatible range and throughput enhancements. A live demonstration will show the nRF52840 Preview Development Kit (PDK) being used to transmit high-resolution images at Bluetooth 5’s 2Mbps raw data rate (double that of Bluetooth 4.x) to a Bluetooth 5-equipped Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone. The SoC and SoftDevice have been engineered to build on the mature architecture of the existing nRF52 Series SoCs and support complex Bluetooth low energy- and other ultra low power wireless-applications that were previously not possible with a single-chip solution.

The nRF52840 SoC and PDK will also be shown supporting a home-automation application using a Thread network based on the IEEE 802.15.4 low power wireless network standard.

Nordic will also introduce Nordic Thingy:52#8482;, a prototyping kit based on the nRF52832 SoC and incorporating nine different environmental and motion sensors plus a microphone and speaker. Nordic Thingy:52 enables app developers to configure, test, and demonstrate Bluetooth low energy Internet of Things (IoT) devices linked to mobile apps and Cloud resources without needing RF firmware coding skills or development tools.

Among other development tools on display will be the Power Profiler Kit, a tool comprising PC-based software and an extension board for the company’s nRF51 and nRF52 Series DKs. The Power Profiler Kit allows software engineers to profile power consumption of embedded solutions at all stages of development.

Other demonstrations include the nRFready Smart Remote 3 for nRF52 Series reference design targeting remote control OEMs/ODMs and manufacturers of smart TVs, set-top boxes, and digital media devices. The reference design offers best-in-class voice input features, free-space gesture support, and multitouch trackpad and button matrix. Voice input is supported by two digital microphone inputs which employ noise and echo cancellation for cleaner audio input sampling.

The company will also host a demonstration showing how Nordic’s nRF52 Series SoCs are increasingly being used at the heart of wearable contactless payment technology. The demonstration shows a Bluetooth low energy wearable using the nRF52832 SoC’s Near Field Communication (NFC) interface for payment. Using the SoC’s NFC capability for this purpose simplifies the product’s design, lowers cost, and reduces space requirements.

Nordic will also show how it is helping advance AirFuel resonant wireless charging. The company will unveil wireless charging in a small form factor technology demonstrator with a wearable device that uses an nRF52832 SoC to implement an AirFuel Power Receive Unit (PRU).

Sensors from TT Electronics offer accuracy and longevity for critical applications

Hong Kong, China, May 31, 2017 / - Hollow shaft single turn rotary position sensors are precise, robust and reliable

TT Electronics, a global provider of engineered electronics for performance critical applications, today launched the PHS family of rotary position sensors that provide precision sensing in harsh environments and in critical applications where repair costs would be be high in the case of a failure. The hollow shaft single turn position sensors have been designed and built to embrace three main design points; precision, robustness and reliability.

The rotary sensors comprise three separate series named PHS04, PHS07 and PHS11. They convert angular mechanical position or the motion of a shaft or axle to an analogue or digital electrical signal and are designed for applications that require adjustments to control variable outputs such as position, speed or volume.

Characteristics shared by the three series are their dust proof construction and stable output characteristics in harsh environments. A rotational angle of 360 degrees is provided and wide operating temperature ranges of up to -40 to +120#61616;C are tolerated in the case of the PHS11.

All of the TT Electronics PHS rotational sensors can be hand or wave soldered and feature long life characteristics of greater than a million cycles, or at least 300,000 in the case of the PHS04 with a 500,000 cycles option available. They are small sized, the PHS11 boasts an ultra thin height of 2.2mm and the PHS04 measures just 4 x 5mm in length and width.

Exhibiting a commitment to and an ability to respond to customers’ specific needs and applications, TT Electronics is able to customise the sensors’ shaft hole diameters for the PH07 and PHS11 ranges. Rotor types can also be customised from D to H type, as well as electrical output angles and linearity tolerances for super-accurate sensing applications.

Applications for the PHS series are to be found across industrial, medical and transportation markets, and specific ones include robot joint angle control, game controllers, motor drive units, 3D printers, intelligent surveillance camera positioning, rotary angle sensors, electric motor-driven bicycles, HAVC sensors, patient monitoring systems, medical diagnostic devices, dental chair positions, car audio and shift-by-wire gearshift systems.

Molex Technology Makes Keypad Backlighting on Curved Surfaces a Reality

Hong Kong, China, May 26, 2017 / - Molex has solved the challenge of backlighting capacitive keys on a curved surface for user-interface designers. Molex PEDOT Clear Conductive Sensors are flexible translucent conductive circuits printed on a polyester substrate that can be implemented on three-dimensional surfaces, allowing for more elaborate designs and greater design freedom. Translucent PEDOT sensors can be used in space-restricted applications where previous methods of backlighting (light guide film or side fire LEDs) are impractical.

“OEMs want to design contemporary backlit capacitive interfaces while retaining the design freedom to bring their visions to life,” said Greg Kuchuris, global product manager, Molex. “PEDOT sensors make the high-end look of backlit keys a possibility for designers in more applications than ever before.”

Historically, designers have relied on indium tin oxide (ITO) which is considered too brittle and inflexible to be used on curved surfaces. PEDOT sensors having been shown to endure 50,000+ bend cycles, and offer a more cost effective solution. The ability to use standard pressure sensitive adhesive for mounting also contributes to a lower overall applied cost.

Capable of both touch-sensing and proximity-sensing actuation, PEDOT Clear Conductive Sensors can meet a broad range of design needs and are intended for any OEM seeking to design capacitive user interfaces with backlit keys.

With the automotive human-machine interface (HMI) market projected to grow at a CAGR of 11.93% through 2021, according to a March 2017 Research and Markets report*, PEDOT sensors can be a key tool for automotive interior designers. SCAD and MTR Announce Collaboration on Major “Art in MTR” Project Preview Exhibition at MTR Central Station

Hong Kong, China, May 25, 2017 / - The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and MTR Corporation kicked off an exhibition in MTR Central Station to celebrate the transformative designs created by SCAD students to help rejuvenate MTR Sham Shui Po Station. SCAD x MTR Art in MTR Sham Shui Po Station Project exhibition will run from 24 May to 30 June 2017 in Exit J of MTR Central Station, and will showcase an inspiring exhibition of works by some of the brightest young creative minds in Hong Kong.

SCAD was approached by MTR with a design challenge to rejuvenate MTR Sham Shui Po station, focusing on the user experience and increasing the engagement between the station and the community. Among seven works submitted by fourteen students, MTR selected works from two proposals for inclusion in the final design for the rejuvenation project.

“SCAD x MTR Art in MTR Sham Shui Po Station Project is an exhibition that showcases the creativity and talent of the student proposals selected for realisation. All 14 students presented their own interpretations of Sham Shui Po in such a creative way. I was impressed by the high standard of work and professionalism the students demonstrated over the course of five weeks. The exhibition in Central Station serves as a preview of the extraordinary designs by the students. We are excited that we will be unveiling the results of this collaboration to the public in Sham Shui Po Station later this year and we look forward to working with SCAD students in the future,” said Mr Andrew Mead, Chief Architect (ARBUK), MTR Corporation.

Student Nicholas Wang, whose work is among two selected proposals, said of the project, “MTR stations reflect the unique local communities around them, and offer connections between different corners of the city. During the design stage, we could make use of our multicultural backgrounds and multi-disciplinary education to create compelling designs where functionality is a priority, while keeping the charm of the surrounding area in our concepts. Our designs examine how the built environment can influence human experience and behaviour, and are carefully adapted to the nature of a busy transport hub. The collaboration was significant, not only because we received insights into the realities of our profession, but also because we were able to provide a positive tangible contribution to our local community.”

Zscaler Reveals Insights from the World’s Largest Cloud Security Platform at Cloud Expo Asia conference in Hong Kong

Gartner estimates that by 2020, more than 60% of organizations will fail to decrypt HTTPS efficiently, missing most targeted web malware, and a staggering 99% of vulnerabilities exploited will be ones security and IT professionals have known about for at least a year.

Hong Kong Workers Waste More Than 50 Hours Per Year Setting Up Meetings

Hong Kong, China, May 23, 2017 / - ShoreTel (NASDAQ: SHOR), a leading provider of communication solutions that make interactions simple, today shared the results of a recent survey which revealed that Hong Kong workers waste massive amounts of time and energy just setting up virtual meetings as a result of technologies that are unintuitive, overly complex or outdated.

ShoreTel’s Build a Better Meeting survey, which canvassed the meeting habits and productivity preferences of nearly 500 respondents in Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, found that the average Hong Kong executive wastes over 50 working hours just managing the logistics of setting up meetings. Even for those who manage to enter a meeting, productivity levels remain low, with the majority admitting they are often distracted by something other than the task at hand.

“In supposedly tech-savvy Hong Kong, nearly a third (30%) of respondents reported spending 11 to 15 minutes struggling to set up their meeting technology, and 10% spent even longer,” said Frdric Gillant, vice president and managing director, Asia Pacific for ShoreTel. “Over the course of weeks and months, that adds up to a huge amount of time that could be spent more productively on things like discussing key business challenges and finding solutions.”

Bandwidth issues and Internet problems (39%), combined with unclear or missing details on local dial-ins or access points (26%) were the main barriers preventing Hong Kong firms from getting the most out of meeting technology. Additionally, 16% cited outdated technology as a challenge.

While communication technologies are transforming the workplace and the ways in which we interact with each other, Gillant notes that not every solution is simple to implement or easy for people to use. What’s more, trying to use a host of standalone communication tools presents additional problems for IT teams and users.

“A good unified communications (UC) system takes the best features of each technology – IP phones, conferencing, video, digital document sharing, chat and mobility – and combines them in a single solution that enables individuals to collaborate seamlessly wherever they are and using whichever channel is the most convenient and effective,” said Gillant. “This makes meetings easier to set up and virtual interactions more natural, which increases productivity and greatly streamlines workflows.”

Lack of agenda adds insult to injury

The overwhelming majority of local respondents – almost 75% – infrequently prepared an agenda ahead of the event. Hong Kongers were significantly less well organised than respondents in Singapore, where far more (42%) claimed that they always prepare an agenda before a meeting, and Australia, where the majority of people (54%) always prepare one.

“Meetings without an agenda are like road trips without GPS or a map – unless you are very lucky, you are going to spend ages going in circles and never get anywhere,” said Gillant.

According to Gillant, laying out an agenda and distributing it ahead of time is an easy way to boost meeting productivity. Even more effective is to use productivity tools, such as agenda planners, that are built into leading UC solutions. Agendas don’t need to be long, but they should outline the topics to be covered, the anticipated goals, required attendees, any materials needed, and a start and stop time.

Unproductive meetings mean easily distracted participants

When asked to rate how productive they think their meetings are on a scale of 1 to 4 (1 = not productive; 4 = very productive), Hong Kongers scored their sessions at 2.66 – the lowest among all the markets surveyed. Over a third (37%) of Hong Kong respondents felt their meetings were either only slightly productive or completely unproductive. Only 11% graded their meetings as very productive, compared with 26% in Australia and 29% in Singapore.

In addition, less than half (41%) of Hong Kongers admitted to fully participating in meetings, with nearly a third (30%) of them citing that they are routinely side-tracked by dealing with other work at the same time. Hong Kong workers also appear to be the most easily distracted by private matters, with 16% admitting to checking personal emails, social media or texting during in meetings.

“Many Hong Kong companies are losing a great deal of time to unproductive meetings, however there are plenty of opportunities to eliminate inefficiency,” said Gillant. “Easy, modern unified communications technology and thoughtful meeting preparation are the keys to building better, more productive meetings that all attendees will find valuable.”

The BMI160 is an inertial measurement unit (IMU) with a state-of-the art low-g 3D accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope. Flyback transformer from TT Electronics is optimised for industrial applications

Hong Kong, China, May 22, 2017 / - TT Electronics, a global provider of engineered electronics for performance critical applications, introduced the HM210-05K060LFTR flyback transformer designed for use with Avago's ACPL-32JT/302J IGBT chipset. With its high level of isolation the transformer is optimized for use in demanding industrial motor control and inverter applications.

The HM210-05K060LFTR flyback transformer offers a higher saturation current capability and a lower leakage inductance performance, making it ideal for high efficiency DC-DC applications where size is critical, and to assure the performance and reliability levels that industrial applications demand.

In designing the transformer, TT Electronics took a holistic approach, considering many aspects in order to produce a product that is perfectly suited to Avago’s ACPL-302J, 2.5A gate drive optocoupler with integrated flyback controller, for isolated DC-DC converter applications.

The transformer has a wide operating temperature of -40 to +155 #61616;C, the latter figure contributing to its excellent 5kV isolation voltage capability between primary and secondary windings. Small in size, the TT Electronics flyback transformer measures just 19.5 x 14.5 x 16.5mm (HxWxD) and is designed for PCB mounting. It has a primary resistance of 305 milli-ohms.
